Acton and Enquesing War Finance Committee announce a Fourth Victory Loan contest offering two $25 War Savings Certificates. Bond buyers receive two competition tickets per $50, with prizes awarded to those guessing the bombing times when bombs are fired at half and full loan targets.
A refined ceremony occurred Saturday at Ballinsfad United Church as Edith Loulan Warne and Peter Binnie joined in marriage. The reception followed at the bride’s home with family and friends, and the couple planned a short honeymoon to Port Arthur before joining the groom at his next posting.
Ontario politics run this week with Liberal leadership votes looming after Mitchell Hepburn’s resignation. Premier Gordon Conant, Harry Nixon and others contend for the post as Ontario discusses elections, by elections and party splits. The CFL platform and education conference roll out with major party debates and policy lines amid wartime considerations.
London report states Home Secretary Morrison says the British government should not use its special powers to restrict race betting. The remark came in reply to a House of Commons question.
Armaco Co Ltd begins work on a new addition to its plant to support growth of its ceramic products. The old building interior also gains installations to improve manufacturing efficiency. Since formation the firm has shown steady progress and built a fine line of quality clay products attracting trade approval.
McCutcheon ends 12 43 schedule in Guelph City Major League with a 2 0 defeat to City Cab loan. N Morton and W Corry from Acton reach Majer Teague Individual Championship, set for next Monday night as top seven bowlers vie for the title.
Knox Church Easter services featured joyful worship with choir, soloists, and instrumental numbers. Dr Hugh Austis sang and the choir directed by Pi Hansen performed, as did several named vocalists and instrumentalists in a program highlighting Easter themes and crucifixion hymns.
Canada’s Fourth Victory Loan opened Monday with Acton and Esquesing showing early sales. F L Leatherland and Jack Chapman made first bond purchases on Young Street while Walter Linham and others joined campaign at Victory Loan HQ. County quotas listed with Acton 190000 and Acton Esquesing 475000, plus regional targets for Burlington Georgetown Milton Oakville and Nassagaweya. A county wide contest offers two $25 prizes.
Mr. R Battye of Young Street received word from England that his brother Lieut John Battye died of wounds on the Tunisian battlefront. He was parachutist and among the first to enlist in the division organized in 1910. The family had served in the African campaign since Christmas, and he was the youngest member of the family. sympathy goes to Mr and Mrs Battye.
Special Easter services featured the pageant The Risen Lord at United Church. The minister read Scripture on Christ's appearance to the disciples after the resurrection while solos and choir provided music. The portrayal of the risen Lord and disciples unfolded in a most impressive presentation.
The Bloomsbury Literary Society held its closing meeting with large attendance. Mrs Berberick, Mildred Wilson, Wallace Lasby, Mary McPherson, and Mrs J Dennis won Bingo. Euchre prizes went to Mrs R Patterson and Hoss Gordon. Season totals awarded to Mrs Berberick and Wallace Lasby. A lunch of sandwiches pie and ice cream followed.
The timetable for annual departmental examinations is now with school principals and indicates schools will finish a few days earlier for summer. High School entrance exams begin Tuesday morning June 22 and end Friday afternoon June 24. Upper School exams start June 12 with the final paper on June 25.
City council minutes show a decision to repair the old Drill Shed in the park with work at the Town Hall entrance including trimming overhanging hedges and replacing damaged fencing. Officials reviewed county rate support, road and sidewalk repairs, and drainage improvements, with Whittier & Co. and the Proweo Company named for materials and services.
Samuel Charters elder statesman of Brampton publishing and politics died Wednesday at 70. He led Charters Publishing Co and owned the Brampton Conservator, served as Ontario MLA and Brampton mayor, and campaigned for tariff protection and immigration limits. Survived by wife Inno Ellen, three sons Clarence, Reginald, H W Charters, and two daughters.

Gavin Elmaley Middleton, born in Elora Ontario eighty two years ago and resident of Hamilton for two years, died Saturday evening at General Hospital Hamilton. Survived by wife three sons James Cecil Ajax Ontario William Acton Ontario daughter Mrs Thomas Peares Hamilton two brothers George Wilson NS and William Vancouver and five grandchildren. Funeral held Tuesday afternoon at Westmount Memorial Park Cemetery Hamilton.
