Strike at HK Porter Acton plant as pickets halt production
Local 24650 saw workers walk out at the HK Porter Disston division Acton plant on Thursday, setting up pickets at the McDonald Boulevard gate to block entry except for management and office staff. Production remained halted as unions and management failed to reach a settlement after six talks and a conciliation meeting. The main disputes are pension terms and wage increases with the union seeking 20 cents an hour plus a cost of living adjustment, plus higher pension benefits, while the company offered a 13 cent first year rise and 12 cent second year with no pension change. About 100 employees, including 20 women, are on strike with pickets on each shift and a tent at Wallace and McDonald. A Toronto resident who evaded pickets prompted an escort by three cruisers, though the incident was described as peaceful. General manager Tom Shields declined to comment.
