Oldest Canadian woman Agnes Young dies at 106 in Ballinafad

Agnes Young aged 106 died at Ballinafad after her daughter Barbara's death two days earlier. She would have turned 107 on September 1. Born in Chin Guacousy Township, Peel County, she aided her husband James Young on the farm, remained active into her nineties, recalled the 1837 rebellion, wore a gold breach from her marriage, and left son James and four daughters Maud Annie Janet and Jennie with Barbara predeceasing her.

I O D E Groups Enjoy Evening of Chinese Checkers

Group Number Three of Lakeside Chapter LO D E held an evening of Chinese Checkers at the home of Mrs. A Fryer. After games, guests shared a lunch. Prizes went to Mrs Helwig and Mrs George Benton. Miss Bessie Rawlings won a day prize. Mrs C F Leatherland and Mrs E Vincent won lucky chair prizes. Mrs George Somerville guessed closest on a plate of march.

Erin Township Council Grants and Financial Actions

Erin Township Council met in Hullsburg on April 17 1939 to inspect roads and bridges, transfer funds to Hillsburg Police Village, authorize overdue debentures payment, and grant sums to the Erin Agricultural Society and Salvation Army Rescue Home. They advanced rent money to the Telephone Commissioners for 1939 and approved miscellaneous and relief accounts. The council will sit as Court of Revision on the 14th May 1939 for the assessment roll and other municipal business.

Medals Presented to Acton Band at Weston Contest

A packed Town Hall welcomed the Weston Silver Band concert on Sunday. Acton Citizens Band earned medals and a silver trophy from their Aurora contest victory, with Bandmaster Sainsbury presenting awards to Perrott and various Acton members. The program featured soprano cornet solos, Euphonium pieces, marches, and vocal duets, plus a call for community support and a band by-law to sustain funding.

The Tuesday United Church Women’s Missionary Society meeting featured Acton School choir numbers directed by Miss T F Hunt and guest speakers Mrs Overend and Mrs Ratcliffe of Georgetown. Robert Kerr Wins Prizes at Stratford Show With Hackneys

Prominent Stratford Horse Show winner Robert Kerr & Son of Acton took multiple awards. They earned second place with two animals under three years, second with King and Queen for carriage team, first with Sonny Boy the hackney stallion foaled before 1936, and sweepstakes second for dam progeny, hunter, and saddle or line hunter entries. R M Barden of Hillsborough also placed second in gentleman's turnout and Mrs. Barden earned second as lady driver of carriage or roadster.
