The Knox Church Acton announces its weekly services led by Rev A C Stewart with the minister’s sermons on The Christ of the Indian Road and Abundant Grace. Sunday School follows morning and afternoon services, with Youth and prayer meetings scheduled midweek and during Holy Week.
Small ads list pigs and potatoes for sale, hens, house for sale, building lots, eggs for hatching, and various services. Includes notices for women and a card of thanks following a death with local names and addresses.
A vintage newspaper blurb previews Wonderland Friday with "Tih Heaven" a drama about two simple hearts finding happiness through faith and courage featuring Janet Gayner and Charles Parrel. It also advertises The Gay Defender with Richard Dix in a spoof get-up and mentions other titles like The Vanishing Wider.
An advertisement touts a trip to Guelph’s big store Macdonalds offering moderate prices and smart fashion. It highlights coats with scarves capes and athletic tailored tweeds in modish colors. Special value features listed at 7.95 9.95 14.95 and 19.75.
Fashionable Crepes offer a wide range of frocks for women and misses in silk crepes silk prints and novel woollens. Styles include pleats and flares in plain colors and prints with prices from 9.95 to 19.75.
The U F O young people held their annual banquet for two hundred guests at Actontant Town Wall. The Churchill Concert Orchestra provided music and a varied program followed by a dance with Strand Orchestra supplying entertainment for the attendees.
The Lakeside Chapter LO D E held a large euchre party with a grand luncheon. Prizes went to Mrs Olterbean Menor R L Davidson and W J Mc Donald as Mason Orchestra played and dancing followed.
Acton Municipal Council and Chamber of Commerce back a new steel covered rink with ice area 176 by 70 feet and a curling arena, capacity 1 500 for skating hockey and curling. Debentures of 15 000 would be funded by ratepayers with 1 503 40 annual payment for twenty years. Local guarantee up to 200 per year for ten years plus 247 residents pledging up to 5 annually if needed.
The Public Utilities Commission discussed numerous applications for a hydro helper position and approved various payments. Hydro and Waterworks accounts were examined with notes on deficits due to city debts. A planned Sunday shutdown and a parish play were also announced amid updates from Hamilton General Hospital.
Acton and District purchased the stock and store mixtures of McKeon and Powell this week. Mr Pallant is holding a clearing out sale. a separate notice in another column notes the meeting for Friday in the Parish Hall postponed indefinitely due to Mr Gordon's illness. Windstorm causes light and property damage across the province. trees, wires and roofs affected while some streets and lighting were darkened.
The One School Board held a morning session with Trustees Tall Holmes Scarrew Browny and others present. The Finance Committee reported $202.74 in payments to vendors and the board adopted the report. A motion to bill township residents for non resident fees starting May 1 was approved, and prepaid school fees were mandated. A broken pump was to be repaired by Heartmare Co and a grave repair task was noted.
The Canadian National Railways annual report lists 25 employees pensioned last year for over fifty years of service. Notable: H S Holmes, longtime Acton agent, ranks second in length of service with 56 years. M Dillon 57 years. F Ryan 56 years. four others at 49 years.
Acton residents and visitors form a lively social week with Miss Annie Corrigall in Kitchener, visits from Mr. Ann Kennedy and Mrs. Wm Near, and multiple travellers from Toronto, Merritton, Detroit, Port Colborne, and Athens. Engagement announced for Barbara Pearl McDonald to Edward Hammond. several ministers and local figures attended events and funerals, with health updates on Joseph Agnew post surgery.
An obsequy for Annie Shepherd of Milton, widow of Thos J Crowe, and for Mrs Charles E McLeod of Toronto, with services led by local clergy, noted surviving family including children, siblings, and the bereaved spouses. Also honors Alexander McDonald, long-time mail carrier, and details of his service, family, and funeral arrangements.
