The record of a Labor Day event shows horse racing and dancing contests with multiple entries led by Miss Nelson and Miss Barclay. Donations from Fraser Valley towns total 489.20 for war hospital work, presented through Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire chapters, with Abbotsford and nearby communities contributing significant sums.
The church held a harvest Thanksgiving with rich displays and a well arranged set of fruits vegetables and flowers. The Rev Indlay praised the display and there was a concert and auction proceeds to the Manse Pond. A wedding in the boarding house united Marion Sinclair and Michael Hugh with a flowers filled room and a supper.
A social note describes a wedding at Abbotsford with Master Tom Brown and Mr Pete Carlsen singing, hosted by Mr and Mrs Andrew Hugh. Guests departed in the early hours, and the town’s prospects improve as residents rally to rebuild, with gifts ranging from cut glass to china and a wine bridal bouquet.
A list of additional prizes presented by towns for fair directors includes 46 dollars cash for a cost two years old gelding or filly and two sacks of Purity Flour for the best loaf of bread. The notice was late arriving and postponed.
The Alexandria event hosted by the baseball team drew a fair attendance despite rain and wind. Music by A Everett and his orchestra featured violin cornet and piano, praised as the best in many days.
Monday evening a fire gutted the Cummerolag Hotel in Alexandria hall. Tim McElroy owner occupant escaped with help as flames spread from the rear. No insurance covered the building and furniture losses are estimated between 1500 and 2000 dollars. Incendiary suspicion noted due to coal oil odor.
