The Abbotsford Post urges readers to keep Christmas bright in wartime. It calls for cheerful spirits, home fires burning, and mutual support as many local boys serve at the Front. The message stresses duty, resilience, and community morale during 1916.
Fruit growers in the Mission Hatzie district consider shipping individually after dissatisfaction with past cooperative methods. The article notes low returns from cooperative rhubarb and raspberries, attributing poor sales to weak cooperation at the selling end and urging stronger grower cohesion, closer market ties, and established brokerage to improve distribution and profits.
The report notes minimal direct season activity to meet crate quotas for cars with all shipments departing above minimum. Berry distribution faced virtually no congestion and L C L shipments did not compete. Weather reduced American rasp imports into Alberta and Saskatchewan, while F W G contracts ensured car shipments met grower supply expectations.
The report notes prairie markets may prefer rasp shipments if organized and connected with retail trade. Calgary jobbers expect to ship rasps from outside Mission-Hatale districts, while eastern markets could supply larger quantities but avoid big centers. Success hinges on nearby towns with a developed retail trade and rail access at shipper point prices. Also mentions B W Bigelow, a Vancouver lawyer turned soldier, arriving in England with his battalion near Seaford in a quiet seaside area near Brighton.
