Timothy Shelton, a descendent of Gonzales pioneers, will place the wreath at the Texas Heroes Monument at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Memorial Service of the Come and Take ItCelebration.Shelton of Floresville, Texas, son of Mrs. MargaretShelton and the late Hugh Camp Shelton Sr., is a descendent of three pioneer families who were early settlers in the DeWitt Colony The pioneers were George W Davis, James Hodges Sr. and Adam Zumwalt.George W Davis came to Texas in 1831 and settledon a league of land in the DeWitt Colony near Cuero. Davis was one of The Old Eighteen that took part in the Battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835. When the Mexicans demanded the cannon, it was hurriedly buried in the peach orchard belonging to Davis.John Gaston stepson of Davis, was one of the 32 that went from Gonzales to the defense of the Alamo.Davis was sent as a delegate to the constitution at San Felipe de Austin Nov. 1, 1835. He was appointed by Sam Houston to be the first Postmaster of Cuero which was in Gonzales County in June 1842.The James Hodges Sr.family came to Texas from Tennessee in 1828. They came as an independent expedition and bought the entire Salinas Grant which included all the land between the Guadalupe and San Marcos Rivers, known as The Forks of the River. The Hodges took part in the ‘‘Runaway Scrape.Adam Zumwalt came to Texas in 1830, settling near Halletsville. He was a Indian fighter and was in charge of the Gonzales district of the Runaway Scrape” after the fall of the Alamo in 1836.
