PAGE POURCoe to Battle BeloilFour First String PostsMay Be Filled By SophsBy Max MosesCoach Moray L. Eby, now In his twenty-ninth season at Coe, shifted his attention this week toward the opening conference tilt of the year with Beloit Saturday afternoon on Coe field. With newcomers bolstering the squad to a more workable unit the team appears to be shaping into a more imposing eleven tiian took the field against Loras last Saturday.Just who arc and who aren't regulars still remain somewhat of a question mark. This condition, .however, is likely to prevail throughout the season. as Eby’s material for several positions is about on par. This season Coe’s line apparently is the eleven’s strong point. At center Chuck Griffith, sophomore find, holds down a first string post. A wealth of material at the guard spots includes Captain Chuck Joss, Bob Schuelzky. Ralph Pilgrim and Ken Wlgness, all of whom arc letter winners. At tackles Eby lias John Harkness, one of the hardest charging men to don the crimson colors in recent years, at one post. Bob Christensen, converted center, seems to be Saturday’sCaptain Jossstarter, while Mickey Stareevich, now on the injured list, may not be readythis week for full time duty. Two sophomores, Dick Wilson and Louis Mulder, saw considerable duty at end against Loras and will no doubt be back Saturday along with senior Ray Christy. In the backfleld Eby has light, but fast and hard charging material. If . Lowman is sufficiently recovered from a leg injury he will be back at his regular duties of signal calling. Mike Myers, who earned his spurs as a quarterback last Saturday, will probably alternate with Lowman.Sophomore Wilbur Gregor, pile driving half back, is slated as a starter along with Morris Trickey, Bob Nicholson or Dale Thompson. All four have plenty of speed although tonnage is lacking. Ray Frost should get the call at full and will handle most of the kicking duties. \Newcomers to the squad include Ben Lowman. letter winner two seasons ago, Keith Teague, Gordan Currie, Melvem Shedeck, Frank Sebben, and Bill Schamberg, giant center, who rejoined the squad after clearing up Ms working schedule. The encounter will be the last home appearance of the Kohawks until liomecoming, October 31, when the Ebymen meet Grinnell.Last season Beloit and Coe woundup with three victories and five defeats each. The Kohawks, however, defeated the Blue Devils, six to nothing.CRIMSONCOMMENTIt wasn’t an ideal way to start the season last Saturday, but don't be too sure that the talk of a good team at Coe this year Is a lot of baloney. Small as the squad is there is a lot of potential material there for Coach Moray L. Eby. If the team can bolsterenough of that old ‘‘will to win spiritthey’re going places.□ □ □Probably the major trouble with the team is tliat they haven’t had enough work. By that we mean Coach Eby lias only on rare occasions two elevens on the field for practice and that makes it plenty tough for a coach to whip a team in shape for an early date game.a □ □Two men slated for a great deal of action were out of the line up until last Saturday. They are of course Vic Lowman and Mickey Stareevich. Both are out with injuries, but should be in shape for next Saturday’s conference opener with Beloit. Vic will carry the bulk of the quarterback duties this season along with Mike Myers. Myers proved himself last week, doing a swell job of signal calling. Big Mickey Stareevich will undoubtedly be used by Eby at tackle.□ □ OThis season Eby has several good sophomores whom he expects to fit in with some of his more seasoned material to good advantage. Chuck Gril-fcth is hailed by Eby as one of the best prospects for the center duties in several seasons and will likely be a starter. Wilbur Gregor, hard driving back, apparently has also earned a first team berth. Two more sophs have taken over the bulk of the end position duties, namely Dick Wilson and Louis Mulder. If it hadn't been for a couple of penalties, or even one for that matter, Coe might well have won the game by a two to nothing score. In any event Loras had six chances to push the ball over from the one yard line and it was only on the last down that they finally picked up the Inches needed to score. Two plays which were stopped cold were run over because of oIT side penalties. When a team holds for five downs inside Itsown one yard stripe that really is something in this writer’s estimation.A Joint service board, composed of two representatives from the army, two from the navy, and one from Lhe marine corps, will hold an all-day session on the campus Wednesday, Oct. 14, starting at 8 a. m.The officers will explain the function, purposes, and programs of the various armed services. Major Lee A. Pollack from headquarters of the Seventh service command in Omaha will be in charge, and the delegation will Include representatives of the ground forces, air corps, and coast guard.FOOTBALL SCHEDULEOct. 3—Beloit, here.Oct. 10—Ripon, there.Oct. 17—Cornell, there. del. 24—Lawrence, there.
