VETERAN OF MANY NAVAL BATTLES ROTARY SPEAKERRelating experiences in theUnited States Navy which led t0 his rece-iving the presidential citation, Coxswain Thomas Gowan gave an interesting account of many sea battles in which he par-ticipated, at Rotary Club Wednesday.Gowan gave a description o' how the navy blasted Japanese vessels out of the water, eventhough there were twenty-six oftheir ships to thirteen United States ships. It was for his part in this battle that Gowan received the citation.He was one of the 167 survivors of the USS Helena, which was sunk in the Kula Gulf, and spent three days and nights on a life raft and 11 days on an island infested with Japanese.R.
