Saw Much Action.1, 1918. Affer a rest in the quieter areas he again went into action at Montdidier and was also at Noyon. Other major engagements Mr. Bitner participated in were the battles of the Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne. He fought in the Argonne from November 1st to November 7. Four days before the armistice was signed his company was relieved.Besides participating in all of these engagements Mr. Bitner’s discharge shows that he was cited several times for bravery in action. On one occasion he captured a three-inch gun at point blank range, the citation reading that he voluntarily captured the piece which was causing his company to lose many men. Mr. Bitner was discharged with the rank of sergeant, having been appointed October 22, 1918.He returned to his country August 19. 1919, having served overseas more than two years. Mr. Bitner is now farming near DePauw, Indiana. During ail of his active services he was gassed only once, in the Argonne, but was never wounded.William Bitner, of DePauw, participated in probably more major engagements during the world was than any Harrison County soldier. Harrison Post No. 123, American Legion, has recently applied for a Victory Medal for Mr. Bitner, who is a member of Harrison Post and his Victory Medal yill carry six of seven battle clasps.Bitner left the United States June 14, 1917.
