Rap music does not solely consist of gansta' rappers taking pride in discussing destructive behavior and female disrespect. Rap is a general music form that has many subsets. Subsets that include pop (MC Hammer), funk/soul (Heavy D. and the Boyz, TLC), easy listening (PM Dawn), and jazz (Digable Planets). And yes, rappers even bust out lyrics that are on a positive tip.Here are some examples.“Teach a man how to be a father/To never tell a woman he can’t bother,” Public Enemy, (“Brothers Gonna Work It Out ”)I ivnuwieuge is ivuig ;“Life’s too short your mission dire/-Nurture another mind before yours expires,” Arrested Development (“Mama’s Always on Stage”)The soul music of the 1970s was oftendiluted for mainstream consumption Conversely, rap music is often marketed as is and allows the public to accept what it wishes. It is a shame that politicians and the mainstream media have repeatedly acknowledged rap music’s negative lyrics and ignored the positive ones to confirm their slanted beliefs— Michael Ross, MadisonLongtime resident put off by pushy panhandlersI have been a Madison resident for 31 years and attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin.The vagrancy problem on State Street, University Avenue and the cross streets in between is way out of hand. 1 can’t walk down these streets without having to avoid panhandlers and people who are doing nothing except either sleeping or hanging out in places like Peace Park and bus shelters.This city needs enforcement of a vagrancy law that makes these people move along to somewhere else, get out oftown or go to jail.This problem is worse than I’ve ever seen it in 31 years and makes the whole atmosphere bad for business and for the business clientele.
