The people's voiceConcerning story onold Easts idSchoolDear Sir:In your Sept. 8, 1972, issue of The Daily Star you published an article regarding the old Eastside School in Hammond and it’s past history.Information to the effect the old wooden two-story high school building was moved to Greenville Park in 1915 is incorrect. The school was not moved until about 1923. After it was moved classes continued to be held there with the same children attending until the newAnnie Eastman High School was completed. I was one of those children. When we left the old building it was then turned over to the Greenville Park residents for their school. The new Annie Eastman High School contained Grades 1*4 and 8-11. The Eastside School then became the firstpublic grammar school in the town withgrades 1-7.To continue the corrections 1 should like to say that A. J. Caldwell became principal of the first high school in thesession of 1910-11. He remained in that position until the 1916-1917 session and not for seven years after 1915 as the article implied. He was succeeded by W. J. Dunn in the 1917-1918 session. Dunn was still principal in 1919.According to the State of Louisiana Board of Education records, W. A. Sisemore became parish superintendent of schools and not principal of Eastside School. He served in the above capacity from 1918-1923.Miss Lucy Brazelman, the lady mentioned in the article but unidentified, was an endeared teacher as was Miss Eastman in the original old high school building. Miss Brazelman was a first cousin of the late Mrs. Lou Cate Dameron and Mrs. Sue Mooney Neelis.Thank you for publishing thesecorrections.Mertie Lou F. BarnesBaton Rouge
