Lieutenant Cavendish responded to the “Volunteer Soldier” with an original poem in which he recounted some of the history of the 20th Iowa and their experiences. Col- Leake interrupted Lieut. Cavendish to state that there was only one thing in the history of the 20th Iowa that he said he wanted to corrects and the Colonel explained by saying that in one of the hard fought buttles Lieut, Cavendish was shot through the body, and while in the hospital he told Col. Leake to report him slightly wounded. The Colonel re-fnBod at first to do so, but then the Lieutenant told him that it would kill his wifo if he was reported dangerously wounded the Colonel consented to do so, and ho said that tho records of that battle would ahow that Lfent. Cavendish was slightly wounded, that in fact he had been shot through the body, and was not expected to live-This thrilling incident caused intense enthusiasm. Captain S.
