I obtained a permit to j visit the battle field thirty hours after the en- t gagement, at which time it was almost im- r possible to recognize any of the dead, owing s to the extreme heat. ]We fought a distance of ten or fifteen miles, t making four distinct stands, and were flanked on both sides by mounted infantry and a superior force in front at each stand. Lieut. Colonel Wolfe is among the killed. It is re- * ported by those who were eye witnesses that t he was shot after he was overpowered and * had given up his sword. I am now remain- f lug at Richmond with my wounded and shall endeavor to return to Rush vilie at the earliest possible opportunity.Capt. P. J. Beachbard, Company C, 16th Indiana.
