50 YEARS AGOMrs. Emma E. Sheffer, N. Stratton St., widow of Howard W. Sheffer, was notified this morning by Governor Edward Martin of her appointment as clerk of the courts of Adams County to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband August 26.□ □ □With the diagnosis this morning of a new case of infantile paralysis in Adams County, the restrictions barring persons under 17 years of age from public places were extended for one week. The new victim ofthe disease is 14 yearold Wilbur H.Miller Jr., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur H. Miller, New Oxford.□ □ □Selection of Prof. Lestor O. Johnson, N. Stratton St., member of the Gettysburg College faculty, as Gettysburg chairman of the USO War Fund Drive, to be directed in the county by Paul A. Kinsey, was announced Thursday at a meeting of the county USO executive committee.Q □ □Approximately 200 of the German prisoners of war now encamped along the Emmitsburg Road, south of Gettysburg, probably will remain here if plans underconsideration are completed. The plan was sai d to be the transferral of about 200 of the Germans to the old CCC Camp Sharpe buildings along W. Confederate Ave., thus establishing winter quarters.□ □ □Damage estimated at $15,000 to $17,000 was caused Friday evening when flames razed the evaporating plant of Gothlieb Kittelberger of Webster, N.Y., at the eastern edge of Bendersville. The cause of the fire remained unknown today, according to L.J. Omer, chief of the Bendersville Fire Company.
