• VA stock car jumped a 7-foot, '8-inch fence on the third turn of the State Fair track yesterday killing a spectator pinned underneath the auto and injuring six others, state police said.Raymond Dean, 50, of Sidney RD 1, died less than an hour after his arrival at St. Joseph’s Hospital. His wife, Mrs. Gertrude Dean, 49, required surgery for internal injuries at State University Hospital. Her condition before surgery was termed poor last night.Five other persons also were taken from the scene by Eastern Ambulance. Treated at local hospitals for minor injuires and discharged were Willard Letz, 67, Waterloo; Ronald Brashear, 20, and his wife Nancy, 19, of West Danby, John Cook, 12, of Coming; and Mrs. Gertrude Arcidiancono, Sidney.The driver of the auto, Lee Milingtcn, Canajoharie, was not injured. Police said Milington’s auto was in its third lap in the feature- event when it swerved and was struck by another car. The auto flipped end-over-end twice said witnesses, coming torest on its wheels. It landed on the dead man, police said.The crowd, standing by the north edge of the fair stables, rushed to the car and lifted it to remove those pinned. State Police Investigator Carl E. Shaver said Mr. and Mrs. Dean and Mrs. Arcidiancono were trapped by the auto.Miss Coleen O’Donnell, 20, of Scottsville, was trampled by the crowd as they ran from the careening auto, but only suffered leg cuts. Shaver said. She was treated at the State Fair infirmary.The auto hurtled the fence, disturbing only its top pipe, said police.Informed of the accident, Fair Director Bernard Potter said he was “greatly disturbed by the event.” He said safety experts and authorities in the field of auto racing “would be asked to conduct a study of the track to “search out every avenue so we can have a safer track.”A similar accident occurred in approximately the same area in 1953 when Chuck Stevenson’s Indianapolis type car jumped the wall. One spectator was killed and 13 were injured.
