The Diary Of ASold ier Of TheCivil WarfIIiIditsr's Not*. We present herewith e eerie* ef ten article* culled frem the war dairy ef Captain C. W. Hull ef the 19th lewa Volunteer liv fantry regiment. It atart* in September ef 1142, when the regiment left Keokuk, lewa for St. Leui*. The lewana fought through the campaign* in Southern Misseuri and northern Arkanaa* and serv-ed in the aiege ef Vicksburg. Frem there it moved aeuth* ward down the Miaaiaaippi t# New Orleans, thence acres* the gulf to Brownsville, Texas. Then it came back acres* the gulf area and served out the war in West Florida, where it was called upon for guard and clean up duty. We present ten articles culled from the dairy.Captain Huff was the father ef Mrs. George N. Scase, who lives north ef Masaena and to whom wo are indebted for this historical diary. A daughter, Mrs. Laura Smith, lives In Crystal Lake, III., another, Mrs. Blanche Comer, lives in Long Beach, Calif. Many of the inhabitants left their household goods and others things for the disposal of our men. General Hindman, in his campaign, conscripted most of the men on his march. At this place and for several mile* around, he pressed every man into service. During the battle a strange fatality seemed to follow them and with very few exceptions, all were killed. There is scarce a dwelling within ten miles but | f has lost one or more of its in-[. mates in this fight. 1 have wit-1 « nessed many scenes of agony in j f beholding wives, sisters and1 even children searching overtheir dead.” | ^December 25th, 1862.
