Reports 200 Died In Prison CampsBy COL. K. S. MALONE Director of Public Relations, Canadian Army Manila, Sept 8. (CP Cabled — More than 200 Canadians captured by the Japanese at Hong Kong Christmas Day. 1941, died in prison camps due to lack of medicine, returning Canadian prisoners said here yesterday.The first group of 33 Canadians at the Manila replacement centre, who came directly from Hong Kong, now are in process of being removed from a British hospital ship to camps and hospitals ashore.Included in the latest group of arrivals are Pte. D. A. W. Benton, of 733 Alverstone St, Winnipeg, who said he was lucky to be alive; Pte, E. J, Morrisseau. Fine Falls,Man.: Pte. J. Onge. 207 Dollardboulevard. St Boniface, Man.. Pte.S. E. Van Koughnett, 141 smith street Winnipeg—all, members of the Winnipeg Grenadiers.Another Grenadier, Pte. J* James, of Lac du Bonnet. Man. said The first thing Tin going to have is a chocolate ice cream soda.I'm sure glad to get off greens and rice, added Pte. I. Sanderson, of Selkirk, Man.. another Grenadier. Pte. W. Siwik of 729 Scotland avenue. Winnipeg, added ‘‘It s going to be a great Christmas this year.Pte. R. Juenkc, of Beausejour. Man., said he intended to eat horne-cooked meals for the rest of hislife. , , „ „Sgt. R. J. Routledge, ot Forrest Man.. said he had no letters since leaving Canada, explaining: “You see. the Japs sentenced me to 15 years impiisonxnent because I wouldn’t divulge‘military information. I had completed two years of the sentence,' __Another arrival was Pte. fc. w. Garbutt. of the Winnipeg Grenadiers whose aunt, Mrs. George Fennell. lives In Lyleton. Man. -Pte. F. W. Herity. of the Gren-adiers. who comes from 593 Young street Winnipeg, said he hopedeverything was all right ax home.From Pte, J. K. Patterson, of the Grenadiers, a Tisdale. Sask.. man came the promise to take a ot cold beer every night before dinner.
