Ed-Edward Adam Stempowski, 88, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 atward was born January 2, 1924 in Lorain, to Anthony and Rose Stempowski.He attended Catholic Grade School at Nativity BVM Church in Lorain, where he was an altar boy. He graduated from Lorain High School where he met his future wife, Beverly Jane Nau. They were married at Camp Ritchie, Maryland in 1941 and subsequently raised 11 children in Amherst.He proudly served in the United States Army as a Master Sergeant and Cartographer in Europe during World War II. He was part of the Normandy invasion and was awarded the Bronze Star for his efforts in securing the surrender of many Polish speaking German soldiers using his Polish language skills and his persuasive voice. He was a member of VFW Post 1662.Most of his life, he worked as a finish carpenter and built his own home in Amherst. Edward enjoyed travel, nature, big band music, and good food.He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly in 1988. He is survived by 11 children, Edward (Sharon “Sue) of Vermilion, Kenneth (Mary) of Elizabeth West Virginia, Gregory (Mary) of Amherst,Solon, Camille (Mi chael Fuhrman) of Seattle, Washington, Mark (Cherie) of Amherst and Monique (Richard) Broz of Lorain; one sister, Florence (Steve) Caruso of Campbell, California and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grand-children.His family would like to thank the staff at Oak Hills for their loving support and care of their father for over the past five years.The Stempowski Family will receive friends Friday, September 7, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 9:30 A.M. in the funeral center, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 A.M. at St. Joseph Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst.
