LOCAL FUHad Most Men In Line Without Musicians In Washington.LABOR DAY PARADE IN D, GWashington, Sept. 1—Virginia fireman with the fire-fighters of five other state* and the District of Columbia marched today In review before Go?. Pollard, Virginia; Gov. Ritchie, of Maryland; District officials and scores of thousands of spectators in the annual Labor Day firemen’s parade.For more than two hours the pro-cesdoo passed steadily before the reviewing stand on historic Pennsyhania avenue. Dozens of spectators were prostrated by the broiling September sun and taken to hospitals for treatment. Numbers of the paraders had to drop out.Maryland and Virginia firemen led the parade with West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and District of Columbia units follow-Among the prizes awarded:Volunteer Plre Company with largest number of uniformed men without musicians, first, Independent Hose Co. Frederick; honorable mention, riartirs-burg, W. Va. Kensington. Md. Harrisonburg. Va. Tne first pr*ze is a trophy and $50 in gold.Volunteer company presen ting the best appearance, first Alexandria, va.Volunteer company under 3.000 population presenting best appearance, first. Silver Sprmg, Md.Sixty Independents In Line.About sixty Independents were in the line of march and were preceded by a I band of 51 pieces from the Elks Lodge in Washington The company was in charge of Assistant Foremen Lewis Flefcchman and Vernon Derr. In the parade also were their engine and old hose Carriage. “Romeo, which was decorated with flowers and ribbons. little Charlotte E. Ahrecht, this dtf, was seated on the seat of the ancient carriage and the old piece of fire-fighting machinerv. which yearn ago turned out j to every fire, was pulled by about twenty men. each carrying decorations. In front was a large sign, bearing the Initials, I. £L C. The local company was enthusiastically applauded and made a fine appearance, it was stated.Since the outfits in the parade were arranged alphabetically, the Frederick company was near the head of the parade. The local firemen also carriedITtTaI two antique buckets, which were about [112 years old. They said that another company had with them a hand pumper dating back to 1741.The active work In preparing the Independents to enter the parade dates back to June 1. Since that time a number of the firemen, including Robert Rumpf. Jesse Dintennan, George Sharrer. Arthur Stone. Walter Danner snd Emory Carmack have been at work.
