Extract of a letter from an officer, dated LongIf and, Sept. 4, 177 6.lt;c The rebels had had very bad information. They detached a number of men from their lines, thinking that only a fmall detachment ofourarmy had.landed, and the manoeuvres of the lhipping gave room for this idea., , When we firft attacked .themthcy. behaved with firmnefs, but when they faw our troops pouring in from all quarters, and fufpeed their retreat was cut off, then.they gave way, and it was at this time we took fo many, prifoners. Defertcrs are coming over daily to us,, and the rebels are going off from New-York in large bodies, even in broad-day light. All ac-'. counts agree that they are preparing to evacuate that town. Whether they will burn it or not is uncertain, as the rebels from the Jerfies and the neighbourhood firenuoufly oppofe that meafure.”A letter from a gentleman with the army, dated Head-quarters on Long Ifland, September 5, fays, “ We have taken eight thoufand pxen on this ifland.”• * f, A correfpondent fays, that letters from New-York, by the way of France, mention, that the ■Britilh troops, on tbe.ioth of September, made an attack upon New-York, but were repulfed with confiderablc lofs, and were forced to return to Long Ifland, where they were entrenching themfelves ; that it is fuppofed they mull winter there ; and that moll of the prifoners which were taken have been fuffered to efcape, not knowing what to do with them.—Articles, like the above, from, correfpondent s, are infer ted agreeable to their requefls ; but wr =a:ijh to have it under flood, that the Paper nvill not vouch for their Veracity.We hear, that all the oScers here are ordered immediately to repair to their regiments in Ireland.
