PA. SINGLE MENIN NEXT t4LLHarrisburg:, lt;I\SV—The Army w'U2 begin drafting single men with dependents next month in Pennsylvania, Acting State Dr ait Director Benjamin F. Evans disclosed today.The move is made necessary, he staled, because the statewide pool of unencumbered single men established las:, month is nearing exhaustion and there will not be sufficient men without dependent to fill the November call.Simultaneously. Colonel Evans re-g vealed that i: w:U be unnecessary to | call up married men. with wives, during November “unless there is a sudden great increase in the number of men needed by the Army during that month.” Such a contingency [ appeared unlikely, he added, as *ijlt;- [ November quotas have already been j set.Apparently this will be in contract to. other states where married men with dependent wives, but no children, will be called up for induction.' According to testimony given yesterday by Maj. Gen. Lewis J3. Hcr-shey, Selective Service director, before the House Military Affairs Committee, the induction of married - men with wives only will begin immediately in order to fill the Annys call for 3.100,000 men by January l. In addition, on Sept. 2 Colonel Evans stated that “upon the basis of present figures, it is indicated that substantially sufficient, single men without dependents are available in class 1-A to fill our October call for men/’,-^The situation with rcspcct to single men has now changed and as a result the army will have to bepin calling- up single men with dependents in November.
