PA. SINGLE MENIN NEXT t4LLHarrisburg:, lt;I\SV—The Army w'U2 begin drafting single men with dependents next month in Pennsylvania, Acting State Dr ait Director Benjamin F. Evans disclosed today. The move is made necessary, he staled, because the statewide pool of unencumbered single men established las:, month is nearing exhaustion and there will not be sufficient men without dependent to fill the November call.Simultaneously. Colonel Evans re-g vealed that i: w:U be unnecessary to | call up married men. with wives, during November “unless there is a sudden great increase in the number of men needed by the Army during that month.” Such a contingency [ appeared unlikely, he added, as *ijlt;- [ November quotas have already been j set.Apparently this will be in contract to. other states where married men with dependent wives, but no children, will be called up for induction.' According to testimony given yesterday by Maj. Gen. Lewis J3. Hcr-shey, Selective Service director, before the House Military Affairs Committee, the induction of married - men with wives only will begin immediately in order to fill the Annys call for 3.100,000 men by January l. Hershev explained that lowering the draft age to include 18 and 19-year-old youths would not affect the draft of married men before December since November quotas have already been made and are now be in a filled.Evans also disclosed that ail draft boards have been asked to submit;. to state headquarters data on the number of men available for induction in December. To Consider IncomeIt was .pointed out- that the new move did not necessarily mean that all. single men with dependents would be called up in November or even .in- December, Draft boards must first determine, . it was explained, whether1 the allotments from the government and persona!* income would be sufficient to support a single man’s dependents after K'he^vas inducted into the army..■ Men wTho married after Pearl Harbor or when induction was imminent'are also being called up con-. stantlv, it was emphasized, because ; as far as selective service was con-r cerned man who married after last t December 7 was still single, v Under orders from selective service local draft boards in Pennsyh'a-nia have been calling up men in the i following order: 1. Single men with no dependents. 2. Single men with ^financial and collateral dependents.“3. Men who married at a time ; when their selection was not im-:minent and who are maintaining bona fide family relationships. with .their wives in their homes and 4. ;married men with, wives and children or children alone.: Local boards have been instructed not to select for induction men in class four until further orders are issued by, national headquarters. In addition, on Sept. 2 Colonel Evans stated that “upon the basis of present figures, it is indicated that substantially sufficient, single men without dependents are available in class 1-A to fill our October call for men/’,-^The situation with rcspcct to single men has now changed and as a result the army will have to bepin calling- up single men with dependents in November.
