Hershey, Selee-: tive Service Director, today; disclosed that 1,100,000 men; will be drafted between now; and Jan. 1, and warned that, unless there are drastic reclassifications or legislation enacted to draft 18 and 19-vear-olds, induction of fathers must follow immediately.Testifying in support of legislation to draft 'teen age boys, Hershey told the House Military Affairs Committee that the 1-A manpower “pool” is now down to 2,000,000 men —single men, and men with wives only or secondary dependents.“We are going to have to get lhe„ 1,100,000 from that pool and when we have done that, we will be up against it,” he said.“Approximately 1,000,000 of these men in this pool have secondary dependents or wives only:—the balance are single.“If we enact this legislation we will add about 1,500,000 18- and 19-year-olds to the pool.“There are about another 1,000.000 single men deferred in. defense industries.“We either must pass this legislation (13- 19-year-old draft), start Turn to Page 2.
