Wash , formerly of Carroll, has been awarded the Bronze Star medal by Major General Fay Brink Prickett. commanding general of the Tenth Armored Division, somewhere in Germany, it hHS been announced by the Division public relations office.T/4 Conrad, a sergeant major of Headquarters Combat Command A, is now on his way home, having sailed last Friday. It willbe four years Jan. 1 since he went into the service. He plans to stop here to visit relatives at Breda and Carroll on his way to Omak. cHis citation reads: Technician . Fourth Grade Mark J. Conrad (39- I 383408) Hdqtrs. Company Combat t Command A, 10th Armored Divi- t Sion, for heroic achievement in } connection with military opera- * tions against an enemy of the t United States ir. France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany, i During the Division’s swift ad- f vance and subsequent capture of Trier, Germany, Sgt, Conrad assumed full responsibiity as an operations sergeant and while under heavy direct artillery and small arms fire in the vicinity of Zerf, Germany, successfully forwarded the advance of his column ' into Trier. His devotion to duty 1 reflects credit upon himself and ' the army of the United States. ’The Tenth Armored Tigers gained early fame as the first iron { defenders of Bastogne, the stum- j bling block of the desperate German counter-offensive into the } Ardennes. More firsts followed. lt;The division was the first in the Third Army to invade Germany and the first to capture a major ] German city (Trier). They were the first on the Western Front to smash into the National Redoubt. Hitler’s vaunted inner mountain ' fortress, and the first division in the Seventh Army to enter Austria. Operating under an identification black out in four different Armies in four widely-separated ] sectors of the front, the Tenth Ar- ; mored was called the Ghost Division by the bewildered German 82nd corps.it
