Swedes Warn NazisAgainst PersecutionOf Jews in DenmarkSTOCKHOLM 'INS) — The Swedish government intervened Saturday to save Denmark’s Jews from Nazi persecution.The action, in which Sweden offered to receive all Jews in the occupied country, came as the Germans took measures to remove Jews from Danish public life.Germany’s answer to the Swedish rescue attempt, which is hacked by the entire nation, is not yet known.Meanwhile, a Nazi declaration issued in Copenhagen accused Danish Jews of “morally and materially supporting a reign of terror and sabotage.” Their “hostile agitation contributes to the critical situation in Denmark,” the declaration added.The German move to take Denmark's Jews from “all phases of public life” is the first official admission of such persecution there. The declaration adds that it is designed to “prevent Jews from poisoning the atmosphere.”Stockholm observers saw the measures as presaging wholesale arrests and deportations among the doomed group. Even before the latest action, terror-stricken Jewish refugees nightly have been risking their lives aboard small boats crossing the sound between Denmark and Sweden.Recently, the Swedish foreign office received information that the Germans were preparing to use the same measures against Jews in Denmark as they have in Norway and other occupied countries. The Swedish minister in Berlin was ordered to convey to the German government word that “the persecution of Danish Jews will cause serious repercussions throughout Sweden.” IThe offer to receive the Jews into Sweden followed.(The Swedish radio, heard by the United States foreign broadcast intelTgence service, said Saturday night that “patrols corisist-ing of three men each have been sent out in Copenhagen and have arrested 500 to 600 Jews. Three transport ships lying in the Copenhagen roadstead are presumed to be intended for the transport of the Jews.”)
