WRITES TO DR. BARBER, GIVING PHYSICAL CONDITION OP . OUR MEN.Health Is Good—All Precautions Taken—An Interesting Letter.Through the kindness ot Dr. Barber, we are privileged ito publish a portion of a letter from Surgeon John Morrl-ot the Wyoming battalion. Morrison says:The battalion has been fortunate In every way since we left Cheyenne. Through the influence of our governor we were changed from the Third to the Second brigade, and got away on ,the third expedition. The trip has been a most pleasant and instructive i ue all. I bid not have much surgical work to do at any time. We \ fortunate as to lose but one man since we left home, and one died at San Francisco since we left there. The are In better health than when we at San Francisco. We had a smallpox scare. It did not Include any of our men. Founteen cases in all have broken out among the United States trcops.Typhoid is common and In some commands severo. I issued lan lt;1 ns we landed that all water be boiled that was for drinking purposes and recommended that anyone violating should be arrested. The men drank boiled water and consequently have caped typhoid fever. Malaria Is common, but we have specific in sufllclenit quantity and it does not get a good start.■ The men get plenty of fresh beef, brought in cold storage from Australia. They have been issued comfortable cots and mosquito nets, so ,to my mind, they are quite comfortable. You would bo interested in the horses here. They about the size of an Angora goat and every bit as mean. They are so small and wiry that when they are running and stop It Is all done so quickly that the uninitiated gets off over the brute’s head. One threw Capt. Wi'lghter, and had a lively time kicking at him while he was trying to get his boot out of the stirrup. The government Issued nil mounted officers captured ponies and saddles. They Issue rice to feed them; some put molasses on t'he rice, probably to sweeten the disposition ot the horses.I have had some most most Interesting trips about tlhe city tamd outside it. I attended Agulnaldo’s celebration when he announced himself president. It was held nineteen miles ficm the city. Some photographer were arrested by the Insurgents for taking views of their trenches and fortifications. They propose to keep there from our knowledge.JOHN J. MORRISON,First Lieut, and Asst. Zander is a regular baseball crank and Is authority on all matters pertaining to the game.OUR SANITARY CONDITION. * Much talk has been indulged in regarding sickness in the army. These rumors have gone the rounds and been magnified until one would think the condition really alarming. There is nothing surprising In this, because in every community will be found those who are anxious to borrow trouble and who are not natural unless' when ceaselessly gabbling about everything going wrong. But this mlsimpression should be corrected. We are an army of 20,000 men and in a country to which we are strangers. Is there then anything remarkable in the foot that people get sick and In some instances die? This happens everywhere amongst the given number ot people, and the percentage here Is not larger than elsewhere. As to smallpox it visits here regularly and seldom proves fatal. Since t'he United States government took charge of affairs everything possible has been dono to Improve the sanitary conditions, and the officers in charge of affairs wUl continue their ceaseless vigitenc the end. We can trust them, and there Is no cnuso for alarm-.
