Imperial Co. Work Noted On 'Island'An invasion task force from Imperial County has been reported in a portion of Yuma County.A special meeting of the Yuma County Board of Supervisors this morning determined that Imperial County had made overt moves toward The Island *' The moves included sending a grader and sprinkler truck to work on a road on “The Island and an attempt hv the Imperial Irrigation District to sign up farmers on the disput-4 1''1 land for electricity.4.000 Acres(“The Island contains about 4.-000 acres and is located across the river just above the city of Yuma. It has been in dispute for a number of years and is currently before the U.S. Boundary Commission )Alerted by State Senator Harold C. Giss, the Board moved quickly this morning to thwart the invasion attempt. Arizona Attorney General Bob Morrison was called and informed officially of the actions of the Californians.Morrison advised two actions. (II That the Board write to Imperial County authorities and determine if the road grading action was done as a favor to some group of farmers or whether the county considered “The Island a part of their responsibility. If so. the letter was to state that Yuma County considered it “a trespass. lt;2 The Supervisors were to also write special delivery' air mail to Morrison requesting the assistance of the State of Arizona.At one point in the discussion this morning it was remarked that it might be necessary to call out the National Guard. Oldtimers oh-served that many many years ago. an assessor from California came across the bridge to collect taxes and was met with guns and jailed. None has been reported back.InvadersGiss said that the action of Imperial County is undoubtedly a move to establish claim to the disputed territory. He states that if Imperial County moved into “The Island they should be declared invaders.A resident of “The Island. Ken Easterday, told of Imperial County sending in trucks and added that he had been solicited regarding power from the IID. G i s * pointed out that the irrigation district did not have a permit to provide service in Arizona, and that Arizona Public Service was only holding up providing power until the boundary question was settled and it was made part of Arizona.(Continued on Page 3 Col. 2)
