uviSOLetters From FranceThe following letter was written by 'Clarence' Reid, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Reid,'east of town:France, Oct. 16, 1918.My Dear Folks:tlwInaie1eaef7eyl\n.tdni-d!I-nehL-eSe•t11ePtssedisl-‘torol-11I.■rr-vbeI received two letters and' the Mitchell Commercial from home yesterday, and while I ha.ve a good chance will answer. I suppose .since .you mailed me the last letter you have been reading some good news in the papers and hearing a lot of peace talk. This said peace talk sure sounds good to me and I think it interests most every one else. The weather has been awful gloomy the last few days, but I sure hope it doesn’t get so bad that it will slow the Germans up too much on their wav out of France.I have seen a lot of German prisoners lately and they are not the hard guys we used to read about, especially after they get on our side.1 am trying to write this by the light of a lantern that goes out about every minute. The Salvation Army has just brought in a lot of canned peas, blackberires and cakes and we are having a big treat. The Salvation Army is sure strong with the boys over here*—seems to do more good than the “Y.”1 am N glad Frank is getting along all right and wish he was over here with me. 1 guess if Bruce Scarlett sailed when .you said, he is over here by this time, but I won’t be likely to see him. I haven’t seen any one from around home. The boys I am with are mostly from Ohio.I in-close a Christmas package coupon. Am sending it mostly as a souvenir, as 1 can’t think of anything that would be worth the trouble of sending. Have plenty of clothes. You spoke of sending me a helmet. I have a good one and don’t think I will need another one.. We are having lots to eat and that is about all we need at this time. Still, if you get this letter and you think the war is going to last another year, you might fill up a box with fruit cake. Tell Julia I got the chewing gum all right, and it came at a time when it tasted mighty good.Well, must close for this time, and hope that all the folks are feeling as well and getting along as good as I am. vWith love to all.PVT.
