Conn. — Darien, the wealthy, super-exclusive Connecticut community which has been frantically trying for more than a year to lower a blackout curtain around a teen-age drinking scandal that hit the nation’s front pages was rocked by an-| other malodorous sensation Sunday — this time involving narcotics.Nine young persons—six men and three girls — several of whom were involved in the first scandal — were hauled in after a police raiding party found a quantity of marijuana in a small cottage occupied by the central figure in the drinking mess.All nine were nabbed at 12:30Pledges Dribble 225 Mile StuntOMAHA 'API — A fraternity stunt that began 5:30 p.m. Friday in Manhattan. Kan., ended Sunday in the Creighton University gym.Eight pledges of the Iota Kappa Epsilon chapter at Creighton dumped a basketball through the hoop after dribbling the ball the 225 miles from Manhattan to Omaha.The purpose of the stunt was to stimulate Creighton student interest in the school's opening basketball game against Kansas State Dec. 1.The pledges took turns dribbling in teams of two, and each Dov logged about 30 miles, averaging four to five miles an hour during the day and six to seven miles an hour at night. Smith was convicted of negligent homicide and reckless driving in the death of Nancy Hitchings, 17. daughter of an airlines executive.The case sparked the arrest of the 13 adults on charges of serving liquor at twro coming-out parties held the night Nancy was killed in the crash of the car Smith was driving.He was sentenced to six months in jail, with the stipulation that the sentence be suspended after 60 days. He was placed on two years probation on the negligent homicide charge and fined $50 on the reckless driving charge The case was appealed and he was continued free in SI.000 bail. The appeal ruling is still pending.The youth, who had been living with his widowed mother. Mrs. Evelvn Smith, recently moved to a small cottage. His roommate is Jack S. Elston, has been awarded a battlefield cititation for bravery in a combat situation while serving with Bravo Company, First Cavalry Division near Plie Me. Viet Nam.In the incident for which he was cited, Pfc Krai and three companions on patrol were afm-bushed and pinned down by ;Viet Cong rifle fire.Krai ran across an ojien area, attracting the Viet Cong fire then held off seven of the guerrillas permitting his companions to escape to a safe distance and radio for help. Krai then made good his own esca|e.Krai entered the army May 20. 1965 and was assigned to Viet Nam duty after completion of airborne and ranger training. He attended Russellville High School.
