C.. some 24 hours after an initial report to his wife in Michigan left much to be desired.The communication stated the 20-ycar-old soldier had been killed November 16 while on a re-connaisance mission, not by the enemy, but by fragments projected when an allied booby trap exploded.McConnell, who entered the service September 15. 1966. had been in Vietnam three mpnths, serving in an area about 70 miles north of Satgon. He had been promoted t o specialist fourth class four weS ago.* and had taken basic training at Fort Ben-ning; Ca. The youth was stationed for a time at Fort Sam Houston, Tex., and had served as an ambulance driver at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco before going overseas.McConnell was born July 8. 1947. at Indianapolis.
