XHE MUSCATINE JOURMAIiWHAT HAS THE Y.W.C.A. TO DO WITH THE WAR?(By Mi*s, M. A. Burr*)In time of peace man likes to feel that woman is dependent upon him for support and protection. We would not have him otherwise if we 'could. In time of war he Is glad to find that she Is not only able but willing'to aland shoulder to shoulder with him and fight for justice and humanity. When a woman .goes into the field and plants and harvests the crops, that the world may (be fed; when sbe takes man’s place in tlio factory or 'in the office, doing work to which she is unaccustomed and surrounded by environment distasteful to her, that the world's iworlc may go on and that the necessary clothing and Implements of war may be furnished for the men in the War Zone; sbe 'is fighting this war’s battles as true-* ly as though she shouldered her fun and march with the regimenT to meet the foe. Tho Y. W. C. A. lids found hundreds of such women working in the fields and factories liy day and laboring far into the night that ■their homes and children may not •suffer on account of her absence from them. Under this double bnr-’den, with heart* saddened by anxiety and misgivings for the welfare of their aibsent soldiers, they often find tho to union greater than they canbear. To these women, the Y. W. C. A.brings comfort and cheer. It gives moral support and the assurance that all that ran be done for com fart and safety of our fighting forces will he lt;£one. Cafeterias and rest rooms have (been provided where these women may secure hot lunches at a minimum price and have tho much, needed rest and recreation during the noon hour. Men who enlist go abroad. Women who enlist come into our communities and add to the. responsibility of the Associations in tho United States. E-verywbore the 'Y. W. C. A- seeks to havo these women properly housed and their environment such, that their elicieucy may not bo impaired. Each day (brings forth now calls for women io tako men’s places in the industrial world. These calls are usually answered (by those whom necessity has forced forward. Can they carry t.hls double burden alone? Can we furnish our quota of man and materials for this war if these women fall us? Wheu yon have answered these questions to the satisfaction of your own conscience you will be ready to answer this question. Will you do your 'bit to aid tho women who are fighting at homo to hasten tho hour of victory and lighten the burdens of the men who arc facing death on the battle fields of Europe?
