A GodsendEditor Sunny South: As you are publishing in your very excellent paper reminiscences of the late war between the States, I herewith send you an account of rather an amusing incident that came under my own onservation. As I said in a former communication, I have the hpnor of being a high private in the rear rank, 2nd platoon, Company A. (’Volunteer Southrons) 21st Mississippi regiment, Humphrey’s Brigade, Army Northern Virginia. On [the night of the 2nd of July, *63, and of the second day’s fight at Gettysburg, Pa., there was an order given for two men. from each company in all the regiments in line of battle to go back to the wagon-yard to draw and cook rations for the men and report back as soon as possible the same night, as we expected and did attack the enemy the next day, charging through the peach orchard. I and one other from my company were sent back and found the wagon-yard and field hospital eatables hid at a farmhouse about two miles to our rear, where we drew and cooked the rations. Now when engaged in our culinary duty an ambulance was driven up with some wounded men and near our fire one of the horses’ legs sank deep in the ground; the driver jumped down from his seat and with the assistance of one or two soldiers standing near by, succeeded in ‘‘pulling his leg” out, when it was found all smeared with apple butter. We all then set to work and found a pit covered over, containing a quantity of apple butter, dutch oven bread and other good things eatable which was a Godssend to our poor sick and dying comrades as we distributed some amongst all irrespective of command. rIt seemed the occupants of this farm, upon hearing of Gen. Lee’s near approach, too near for comfort, buried all their provisions, with the hope that the Yankees would “do us up” and then they could return and find all intact.Yours truly,JAMES H.
