Former residents honored as war heroesFive former area residents were among the war heroes honored at the dedication of a new memorial in Harrisburg this week.State Sen. Bob Robbins, R-50. said a ceremony was held to dedicate the Soldiers Grove Memorial. which was recently built behind the Capitol building in remembrance of the 373 Pennsylvania recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.Former area residents who are named on the memorial include four Medal of Honor winners from the Civil War and another who served in Korea. They include, form the Civil War:• Lewis F. Brest. Mercer County, private in Company D, 57th Pennsylvania Infantry.who was awarded the Medal of Honor for capturing an enemy flag at Sailor’s Creek. Va.• Henry S. Huidekoper, Crawford County, a lieutenant colonel in the 150th Pennsylvania Infantry, who earned his medal for remaining at the front command of a regiment at Gettysburg despite having suffered a severe arm wound.• Monroe J. Reisinger, Crawford County, corporal, Company H, 150th Pennsylvania Infantry. who received the Medal of Honor for brave and meritorious conduct at Gettysburg.• Timothy Spillane, Erie County, private. Company C. 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry, whose bravery and reluctance to leave the field of battle after twice being wounded at Hatchers Run, Va., earned him theMedal of Honor.Named on the Harrisburg memorial for his heroic actions during the Korean War is John D. Kelly, Crawford County, private first class, U.S. Marine Corps, Company C. 1st Battalion. 7th Marine Division. He received his medal for single-handedly charging three enemypositions in the face of gunfire.He was mortally wounded dur-•/ing the assault.These five men are a tribute to our country, and in particular, the 50th Senatorial District in northwestern Pennsylvania. We should be proud that our area is so well represented by these Medal of Honor winners.Robbins said.Thanks to this new memorial, their valor will never be forgotten. he added.Several persons from northwestern Pennsylvania came to Harrisburg for the dedicationceremony, including members of the 150th Pennsylvania Bucktails. a re-enactment group that portrays two companies recruited from Crawford County during the Civil War.Members of the re-enactment group enhanced the ceremony. They added a special touch. Robbins said.The senator said it was especially fitting to have the 150th Pennsylvania Bucktails•rin Harrisburg since two of the Medal of Honor winners from the northwestern Pennsylvania — Huidekoper and Reisinger — were members of the 150th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War.
