LT. C. A. RE 1ST ADAWARDED SILVER STAR(The Silver Star medal, given for gallantry in action, has been awarded posthumously to Lt. Carl Reistad, son of Mr, and Mrs, Arthur A. Rei- 1 stad, of De Pue, and husband of the ] former Miss Elaine Chiado of Spring ; j Valley, who met death over France Aug. 27, 1944.The award was presented to his widow, Mrs. Elaine Reistad, by Lt. Milton E. Buckhaults, of the Galesburg office of the Sixth service Command, representing the War department. The citation revealed that Lt. Reistad gave his life so that two crew members of his A-20 attack bomber could bail out after his plane j was struck by flak over heavily de- i fended enemy territory. IAccording to the citation the De Pue officer’s aircraft engaged in an attack on an ammunition depot in I France and braved heavy anti-aircraft fire to score excellent results with his bombs. Then returning from the mission over France, his plane already damaged by flak, was hit j again by heavy ground fire so that it was in badly crippled state.Lt. Reistad, according to the cita-I tion, stayed at the controls and ordered his two crew members to bail out. They did, but it was then too late for the De Pue officer to leave the plane and observers noticed that the bomber lost altitude fast and f while trying to follow the formation was lost from sight due to a thiclc haze. - i t,- ij' i
