Viner this morning successfully completed solo tests in the civil pilot training program at the municipal airport. Viner’s successful passing of the tests brings the first phase of the school here to a conclusion with all nine students now enrolled in the school granted their “wings.”Other students who have soloed previously includesiWilson, Robert ToborgWillisNesper and JohnSchumacker.Requirements Listed.The piloting training program, which opened at the airport in September, has enabled the nine students now en- 1 rolled to learn the fundamentals of flying and to handle a plane creditably.The students are required to jtake eight hours of training before j being permitted to fly alone. Tosuccessfully pass the solo test, !such as was completed by Viner -this morning, the student must take off twice and land twice in a c manner satisfactory to the in- jstructor. . IRoy Tooman, as instructor of the pilot training school, has given ,a all of the instruction in the school b since the project opened. CSome of the students who are a n little farther advanced than the IV others already have started solo o practice of spins, according to % Tooman. The students are given E four hours of dual instruction in T this maneuver before being per- b mitted to go through this training , elt; alone. The purpose of the spin d practice is to give the student K training in pulling his plane out tlt;of spins. EPractice Landings. c;Another requirement of the course being given here includes j jjthe making of precision landings ^ ! without the use of the motor. Stu-i dents are also given a great deal f( j of practice in simulated forced \ landings. In order to give the p student training in landing his!u j plane in the event of an emergen- j ^ I cy, the instructor cuts off the mo- £tor and advises the student to | sl I make a landing without the use of || the motor in some field other than f! the airport. I ^In making precision landings. ; Nthe student is required to change v I the course of his plane from a lt;dow’n-wind direction and head j, j into the wind before setting his t‘ ship on the ground. ^The nine students who have (] passed the solo tests will now have . an opportunity to try to qualify for an advanced course that willconsist of combat maneuvers such jf*as are used in warfare.Tooman recently was granted his license and rating by the civil aeronautics authority for giving instruction in this type of combat training.
