The following poem is furnished by t | a member of the Smeth|ort high I j school rhetoric class:I The Brave DefendersBy Norman Bermender.Twti a cold winter’s evening And darkness did prevail;: Not a breath of air was stirring Throughout the entire vale.The old folks ’round the fireplace We telling stories bold.Of courageous knights and rulers Who lived in the days of old.When suddenly through the night air There rang a loud, fierce cry ;“The Germans are upon us!Come quick, for we must fly!♦ tThe people started to their feet | When e’er that cry was heard;They rushed through the streets of I the village.And into the darkness they sped.There were united four score and twentyIn the,center of the town.Resolved to defend their long-loved homesFrom the enemy gathered ’round.The Hermans with triumphant tread Charged on that little band,But to their surprise found a wall ofstone ,Made of men of a foreign clan.The fight raged heavy and hard,But it was to be for naught,And at dawn not one of the braveban#Remained from their fight, well fought.And now in the days to followWhen peace reigns again in the hearts of men,There will be told 'round new fireplaces the story How those heroes died for their native land.rUIID/'U MATI/'P
