Review: War pilots' torture unnervingBy RICH TOSCHESTHE GAZETTEJames Bradley, author of the New York Times best seller Flags of Our Fathers,” is back with “Fly-boys,” which covers World War II in the Pacific and focuses on eight Navy fliers imprisoned by the Japanese on the tiny island of Chichi Jima.Bradley will be in Colorado Springs on Monday signing his books. At the heart of his new book are the American pilots, including George Bush Sr., who bombed the small island and were shot down. Bush was rescued by a submarine crew.The other eight pilots were not rescued.Bradley’s accounts of what happened to them are, at best, deeply unnerving. Some were decapitated. Others were used by Japanese soldiers for bayonet practice. Several were eaten by their captors.
