Bronze Star Is Presented To WhelchelMaster Sgt. Warren W Whelchel, in Bruns General Hospital, SantaFe, N. M., has been presented with i the Bronze Star medal by Col. John R Hall. Whelchel was engineer for ! KGRS and KGNC when he lived at 805 North Tyler, before the war.j His citation reads in part: “As chief non-commissioned officer ofthe regimental communication | section. Sergeant Whelchel performed meritorious service from Ilecember, 1941 to April. 1942. onLuzon. Iuring repeated bombing and strafing attacks, his section I successfully maintained an effi-! cient communication system within the regiment.I “Sergeant Whelchel, by his:technical knowledge and leader- i ship, materially aided the conduct of operations.”Arriving overseas in January.; 1941, with the 200th CA, A A, from Fort Bliss, he was assigned to the headquarters battery as communications sergeant. 'Along with the others he was taken prisoner on April 9. 1942. and was liberated in Manchuria, September. 1945, by the Russians.The sergeant's unit was cited four times, and lie has the Purple Heart and two bronze clasps on his Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal, in addition to his new awardWhelchel has had a radio engineer's license since 1934 and has credit for contact with 65 countries on all continents. Upon his arrival in the Philippines, he set up a station at Fort Stotsenberg and regularly contacted Hawaii and the United States. Sergeant Whelchelmade it possible at times for some of his buddies to contact their par- j ents in the States.At Bruns since October, 1945.
