Jennings, 611 South 7th avenue, Maywood, have been notified by the Navy Department that their son, Raymond, died April 28 in MakassarRaymond SmithPrison hospital, Celebes Island, East Indies, of malaria and beriberi.Entering the navy in 1933, “Bus,” as he was known to his friends, trained at San Diego, Calif. Upon completion of schooling, he served on the U.S.S. Chicago and U.S.S. San Francisco, transferring to the U.S.S. Pope in the Philippines in 1940.The Pope was sunk during the battle of Java Sea on February 28, 1942, Bus being thrown into the water when the ship was hit. He remained in the sea for three days before he was picked up by Japanese boats and taken captive.A resident of Maywood since he was 8 years old, Bus was graduated from Emerson elementary school and Proviso high school, class of ’32, where he was active in sports. He was born in Kankakee, 111., on January 1, 1914. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. C. Ray Fink.
