Robert McMahanLt. Commander ROBERT McMAHANIII had a dream, and that dream was to be a fighter pilot.“Robert was very easy going and had a big smile,* said JerrlAnn McMahan Wilson, widow of McMahan. “He was studious throughout college but he always had wanted to fly. It was his goal to become a Navy pilot.The couple were married Oct. 16,1966. There were no children.Bom in Warsaw, Mr. McMahan attended Jacksonville High School. Hegraduated from Illinois College in 1964 with a degree in mathematics and physics and then enlisted in the Naval Reserve. He became a commissioned officer in June 1965.On Feb. 14, 1968, Mr. McMahan’s F-8 sustained a direct hit on a flight over Vinh, North Vietnam. That year, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart and other medals.In 1973, North Vietnam released American POWs. Mr. McMahan was on the list but he did not return home.North Vietnam returned remains identified as Mr. McMahan’s in 1990.Mr. McMahan has a brother, Steve McMahan and a sister, Cathy McMahan Ludwig, both of Keokuk, Iowa.‘Bill’ Sanders
