'Conchy' HeroPfc. Desmond T. Doss, Seventh Day Adventist and conscientious objector, refused to carry a gun, but was sent overseas as a medical aide with the 77th Division. He is now their hero. On bloody Okinawa, he was reading his Bible, as usual, when his commander asked his help in rescuing 75 Yanks, lying wounded under murderous Jap fire. He made the rescue almost single-handed.
