William McKee, Civil War veteran killed in battle at Prairie Grove near Kansas City, Mo. —Gate CityStory of 3 Missouri patriots is retold for Memorial DayEditor’s Note: As Memorial Day, 1969 it is interesting torecall the names of soldiers who fought in earlier wars for the United States. Through Mrs. Thelma Wells it was learned that in Clark county, Missouri are buried in one small cemo* tery plot three patriots from three very early wars. It seemed appropriate to recall their story.By Mrs. Thelma WellsKAHOKA, Mo.—Not far from the historic town of Athens lies a tiny cemetery, known as the Benning cemetery, which is located on the farm until just recently owned by Glen Christy, now the property of C. J. Daniel.Christy still lives on the place, and through his kindness and help it was possible to find the tiny plot which contains theVALLEJO, Calif. (AP) — Abreakdown in communications between work crews filling and emptying water tanks on opposite ends of the ship, unaware of each other’s work, caused the $50 million nuclear submarine Guitarro to sink at its outfitting dock May 15, a Congressional subcommittee says. The report, issued Wednesday by three congressmen, said the circumstances which sent thegraves of three soldiers, one a Revolutionary War, one a War of 1812 and one a Civil War veteran.Christy kindly took time from his work to take us to the tiny cemetery, not only helping us over fences, but ushering us through a clover field on up to where a grove of trees stand marking the spot of the burial ground. The cemetery is in a deplorable state, overgrown with weeds, poison oak, brush and fallen limbs are on every side.Christy stated the last time the cemetery had really been cleaned was when WPA labor was obtainable, which dates back to the 1930’s.The grounds are-enclosed in a woven wire fence, which also needs repairs.began emptying five tons of water from the aft section, completing the job at 8:30 p.m.A member of the nuclear group noted a sudden marked dip in the ship forward and went to investigate. At the same time the other workers returned and noticed the submarine down sharply at the bow “with massive flooding taking place through several large open hatches.”After some searching the grave of J. S. Thompson waslocated. The inscription on his stone reads: “J. S. Thompson died Sept. 9, 1851, aged 85 years. A native of Virginia and a Revolutionary War soldier.”This soldier we have been told is a relative of the Biedman family. By the inscription you will note he was very young to be serving as a soldier, for he could not have been more than 15 when the war ended; but in those days there were so many hardships and responsibilities, even for children, that age was of little importance. The monument of the Rev. Joab Hill, who was a soldier of the War of 1812, was not so hard to locate. The inscription on this monument reads: “Rev. Joab Hill died October 5, 1847, aged 72 years.”Joab Hill was a Baptist minister, a politician and a soldier. As a politician he represented Claiborne county in the Tennessee legislature more than one term. As a soldier he served in the War of 1812 and his service record from the War Department reads: “The records of this office show that Joab Hill served in the War of 1812 as Lieutenant Colonel in the Fourth Regiment East Tennessee Militia commanded by Col. Samuel Bayle from Nov. 13, 1814 to May 18, 1815.He was born in North Carolina in 1775 .He married Elizabeth (Continued on Page 10)Sinking of $50 million sublaid to communication lag
