This message 1 came to them in regard to their * son Fred who has been serving i in the army. The last word from ! Fred was sen 1 from Bateuin. At that time he was in the midst of the battle but was still thinking of home and mother’s cooking, and hnw the Oak Park-River Forest high school teams were making out. i Fred has been in the service since November, 1940, He was asenior in high school when he left 1lt;j join the army. He was with the Maywood Tank corps ^! and trained at Fort Knox. When! their period of intensive drilling was over the tank corp Was sent with other units to the Phiiip-I pines. The senior Mr. Jannisch is a member of the River Forest tire department. The tradition of doing a job without flinching and doing it well is one that has been■ established in the Jannisch Pam-; ily for a loiug time. The younger Fred’s bravery in battle and his ability to send home word that he : wes feeling fine in the midst of the terrible battle of Bataan are samples of that spirit.
