World WarMemorialThe World War Memorial Committee appointed at the Town Meeting of June '023 and charged with selecting and locating an appropriate World War Mem orial, wan unanimous in its agreement upon the proposal to develop the Branford Bowl into a semi-formal open air am pi theatre The committee believes that such a project will serve not only as a uniguc memorial of exceptional dignity, but will have the additional advantage of giving the Town of Branford something of a practical value, and an out-door meeting place, by nature of its sheltered location and beautiful setting would serve many purposes.Primarily, the scheme, as being constructed, takes advantage of the natural depression on the green in back of the Town Hall, which by a system of grading, terracing and additional plant ing, has been moulded into a semi-circular ‘ * bowl9 f with gently sloping sidesThe design as adopted and placed shows a platform, slightly raised and surmounted by a simple monument bearing an appropriate design and inscription. The committee feels convinced thatthe semi-seclusion of the bowl, located as it is away from the main thoroughfare of the town, will insure the quiet that will recommend this spot for the many uses to which it could be put. The noise resulting from the great increase in motor transportation and general noise of street traffic, have proved repeatedly the futility of making audible the various ceremonial speeches and exercises that take place on the green from year to year. In addition to being an excellent place for memorial ser-\ ices, the Bowl can also be used for the graduating exercises of the High School and plays, lectures and concerts, occasional community gatherings of patriotic or local interest. The planting of additional trees, shrubs and vines to flank the monument or cenotaph (all in process) will ultimately make of the amphitheatre a place of exceptional beauty and one to which the people of Branford can point with pride as being a feature entirely unique in this section of the State, and a fitting and impressive tribute to the inemorv of our soldier dead.Through error at different times, the Bowl has been referred to as ” Legion Park,” being constructed under the direction of the American Legion. The World War Memorial Committee wishes to correct this error and emphatically state that the memorial as conceived and accomplished is strictly and purely a Town proposition. The Bowl and Cenotaph are a tribute to all the \eterans aud soldier dead of the World War and the American Leg ion has no interest in the memorial other than it is a tribute to their ser vice and sacrifice during the World War.obilieseiprlt;meialtinquStheStJ.ClT)ito7.VleideceStPlt;infoSiotvi0180Ge?t:11t!ioinolcl1Cf]Trlt;a:d*tlt;ct£clvsm
