Jl —So long ago as the latter end of the year. 1748, foon after the cohclufion of the fate peace, one Mr. Window, an eminent merchant of Bofton, in New-England, fitted out a veflel, which was named the Howlet, for a trading voyage to the gulph of Mexico ; on i board of which, a Black, belonging to his I brother, general Window (a provincial general) of the lame place, went as cook, but no account or tidings being ever received ofthe faid veflel for feveral years, it was concluded, that Ihe mull: have been call: away, and the whole crew loft; but a Ihort time ago the fate of the Ihip was difcovered after the following manner: the general above-mentioned being lately in England, on fomeparticular bufinefs, and going on board a WeftIndia trader, lying in the river, in order to make the neceffary preparations for his return to Bofton, to his great furprize obferved his old fervanc the Black, who was infinitely oveiyoyed at meeting his former mafter; by. him the general was informed, that the Howlet was by ftrefs of weather driven on Ihore near cape Florida,where the crew were made prifoners by the Indians, who put them all to death, ex-' cept himfelf, whom they faved on account of his colour, and fold him to a! Spanilh merchant of the Havannah, who happened to be in thofe parts : with him he Continued feveral years, being fo narrowly watched that he had no opportunity of making his efcapie; but about a twelvemonth ago, obferving a New England Ihip, as he conjeftvired, near two miles from Ihore, he ftript Himfelf, and fwam to her, and to his great joy found his conjee; ture true.
