Ritchie, the well equipped military reservation at Cascade, will be used this year by the Maryland State Guard for training and the dates of camp will be July 2S to Aug. 4, inclusive, it was officially announced this week by Lieut. Col. Crown 0. Diehl, this city, commanding officer of the Eighth Battalion. For the first time since 1942, the State Guard will use Camp Ritchie which was recently turned back to the State of Maryland after its use by the Intelligence Department of the Regular Army. Formerly it was used by the Maryland National Guard and it is expected to again be used by the National Guard when it is re-organized.Camp Ritchie is well located in the mountains near Pen Mar Park and makes an ideal summer camp.Diversified training will be offered State Guardsmen who go to camp, including range firing, instruction in different types of weapons, first aid, communications training, guard duty and drilling. The men will be trained by both Regular Army officers and State Guard officers. There will also probably be a review of all State Guard units by Governor O’Conor and high ranking officers.Additional men are needed for local companies and recruits should apply at the State Armory on drill nights which are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Ages are from 16 to 64 years.
