Rogiuaild Smith, 23.son of Mr. 'and Mrs. RobertSmith, of 919 Pine Road, DarbyTownship, has received theSilver Star Medal, the nation’sthird highest award for heroism in Vietnam.Smith, a platoon leader in Co.REGINALDsmithcitation, and gave first aid to the wounded soldiers.He aided in moving thewounded to an evacuation site.After all the wounded were secured, Smith returned to the battle area and began placing a suppressive volume of fire on the hostile force.“His valorous actions were responsible for saving the lives of several fellow soldiers.” according to his citation. He was commended for bravery, aggressiveness and devotion to duty.” Smith received the medal ?rom Maj. Gen. Harris W. Hollis, commander of the 25th Infantry Division. ■Smith, who also holds the Combat Infantryman Badge,entered the Army in April of A. 4th Bttn., of the 5th Infantry 1968. He is a 1965 graduate ofDivision, distinguished himself on March 15. Elements of . his company came under intense small arms fire from a large enemy force while on a reconnaissance operation.Several friendly troops were wounded during initial, contact-Smith moved through “a hail-pf enemy fire,” according tovhisDarby Township High School. His wife, Nancy, lives at 634 Clifton Ave., Darby Township.Lt- Cindr. Anthony R. De Marco, whose wife is the former Katherine M. Peitl, 505 Ridley Ave.. Ridley Township, has been awarded the Navy Combat Action Ribbon for duty in Vietnam.
