CRIMSON COMMENTBy Max MosesElsewhere In this paper we mentioned the fact that Coe's track team operated on the theory that It Is better to have a well-rounded team than one composed of a few men who win firsts consistently. Of course the Ideal team would be one In wirlch every man could come through with high honors, but Uiat Is seldom realized on any team.□ C □We think the point we arc trying toprove merits a little explanation. DaveClutterham and Dick Houdcn of Cornell between them won five llrsts lor 25 of the Hilltoppers* 34 points, yet Cornell was over 19 points behind the victorious Kohawks who won only two flrsts. The same thing Is true of Lawrence whose Jim Flcwegcr won five first for all but eight of the Vikings* total.□ □ □We grant that these men are exceptional and would be a blessing to any track team. Coe might not have any man capable of accomplishing what Fieweger did. but they do have men, who II they were to concentrate on one or maybe two events could greatly Improve their performance and the Kohawks might consequently win more first place laurels. Evcrette Stoutner, for instance has competed In nearly every event on the schedule, and has been one of Coe’s most consistent point winners.Stoutner has a lot of natural ability and If he were to concentrate on almost any of his many events he might well be conference champion inthat event today, but if he and others had done this Coe might have won more firsts but not the conference cliampionshlp. Wc think It Is mighty smart coaching and o grand example of teamwork.□ □ □lit view of the fact that word has drifted around to this comer that the faculty was not entirely In favor of n skip day in honor of the track team we think that a few words of explanation es|eclally to the fnculty should be presented.□ n □We spent most of the day Sunday talking to Clan of C members and especially to their president, Robert schuelzky, about a proposed skip day. and we think we understand fully why it was called. Many may think that the students capitalized on the excuse just to take a day olf, well they didn't.□ □ □Wc have never heard a more broadminded discuson of a subject than the Clan of C men had. They fully reaJzed that Coe was on a speed-up plan and that the school year was almost gone asd they knew that everyday counted a great deal toward Coe’swar efforts. They realized too that In our track team we have a group of men that has long been slighted at Coe—men that deserved a truly great tribute.□ noThat tribute resulted In a skip day for in the minds of the students that was the least they could do to show their appreciation. Another thing that the students knew was that a great many members of the team are soon to enter the armed services of the United States. It was a befitting gesture to give men who have done so much for Coe the type of send off they deserve. What was lost In time was gained in the realization of thestudents that In America we still take time off to honor our heroes should woke Coe up more than to the fact that wc have a lot to for. We think It not only was a S* tiffed honor to deserving men. bu» an added Incentive to the waning eammi*spirit.I-M Kittenball May Not Be CompletedWith Friday, May 15. marking tb end of the Coe College 1911-42 intramural program, It is not llkelv that the kittenball championship will be decided according to an announcement made tills week by manae.-Charles Okell. However, In an effort to wind up the spring program, games will be played every night of this week. The intramural tennis championships have not as yet been decided due to wet courts.
