Cong FireDamagesDestroyerFROM AP AND UPISAIGON—U.S. Air Force pilots shot down a Communist MIG jet interceptor yesterday as they attacked targets on the outskirts ofthe North Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, U.S. spokesmen reported today.The Communist plane was one of at least ninethat challenged American raiders. At the same time an American destroyer was damaged byVietcong shore batteries.The U.S. command said the supersonic dogfight erupted when U.S. Air Force F4 C Phantom jets and F105 Thunder-chiefs streaked into the Hanoi area to hit the Sontay army supply area 23 miles west of the Communist capital.It was the first reported dogfight over North Vietnam in recent weeks.American spokesmen said no American planes were lost, but Hanoi said three U.S. planes were shot down.U.S. headquarters said one of the MlGs was blasted out of the skies by one of the Thun-derchiefs.IT WAS the 38th MIG kill by American fliers in the Vietnam war as against 10 U.S. planes shot down over North Vietnam in air-to-air combat-In South Vietnam, headquarters reported that seven U.S. helicopters were hit by enemy ground fire yesterday in Vinh Long Province in the Mekong Delta. Three of the choppers were destroyed and the other four were damaged. Headquarters announced U.S. casualties as 3 killed, 12 wounded and 2 missing.Also in South Vietnam, B52 bombers made three more raids last night and today, including one bombing of enemy bunkers and installations in War Zone C near Cambodia in support of American ground forces in Operation Junction City.Meanwhile, U.S. spokesmen announced that Communist shore gunners scored two hits on the American destroyer Oz-bourn Saturday as the U.S. ship was supporting U.S. Marines battling Vietcong forces just south of the demilitarized zone.lt;Spokesmen said the Ozbourn suffered light over-all damage, but that the Communist shells wrecked part oS the ship’s gunfire radar system and damaged a fire control room and storage area.No American casualties were reported aboard the Ozbourn.The Ozbourn has arrived at Subic Bay in t h e Philippines for repairs, spokesmen said.A military spokesman said the Ozbourn was about two miles off shore and just south of the DMZ when the Communist shore batteries opened up.
