He is | buried in Clay county.OAKHILL — Three paintings hang today in the library of the State Historical Society because a pioneer Clay County historian crossed paths with an eccentric painter.Adolph Roenigk, the historian, came to the United States from Germany. He settled in Clay county with relatives.Roenigk got a job with the Union Pacific railroad laying rails near Fossil Springs (now Russell). At the time, the settlement consisted only of a large dugout kept by the sta-tionmaster.Wouoded Ib RaidIn May, 1869, Roenigk and six other members of the railroad crew were attacked by a band of Cheyenne Indians. Two of the men were killed and Roenigk was among four who were wounded.Years later, Roenigk met Jakob Gogolin, an eccentric painter who came to the United States from Germany via Russia and Hungary.Roenigk described the battlewith the Indians to Gogolin, who made six paintings which were included in Roenigk's book of Kansas’ pioneer history.Three of the painting* are now displayed at Topeka la the State Historical society library.(Chief Shuts OffRumbling BlazeNORTON — A fire rumbling like 10 jet planes flying close to the ground’’ broke out at the site of construction work on an addition to the Norton junior high school Tuesday.lt;•Students in the nearby school were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
